IMPACT OF WEB 2.0 APPLICATIONS
Overview:
Initially Web 2.0 was devised to mean using the web as a platform for development of new programs and interactive tools. It can be said that web 2.0 is better understood as a way of thinking about the direction that technology is taking in the coming years. As Barnes et al. (2008, p.39) state that the best definition of web 2.0 is a change in the way people use the internet for productivity, collaboration and information sharing. But more than just being an extension of existing tools that have been made web accessible for everyone, applications in the Web 2.0 models are designed exclusively and specifically for online usage.
Interaction with other people is considered as one of the key characteristics of Web 2.0. Today Facebook, MySpace, FriendSter websites and others have become core interaction methods for not only many of youth, but also professionals who use marketing-oriented sites like LinkedIn and Plaxa. Other sites, such as Flikr, have enabled online sharing of photos. Besides that Yahoo! Maps, Google Maps, and MapQuest, which once provided maps, have added locations of restaurants, retailers and other businesses that users can search for while viewing maps. This has also added greatly to the revenue of these websites.
Nowadays the Web 2.0 phenomenon is unstoppable and is considered almost a de facto standard and if someone is not using those tools then they are lagging behind. To achieve deeper understanding about the impacts of web 2.0 as well as sustainability and ethical issues related to this domain, it is essential to delve people’s reflective thinking and their experience by interviewing them.
