Introduction and Background
The world of computing has severely impacted the society today. Computers took over different human activities. Computing revolutionizes the job market, creating new job scope and opportunities but at the same time also diminished certain jobs.
Computers are used so widespread today where there is not much business left without the use of computer. The automation process of computer has brought higher productivity for the employees, with many of the jobs being done manually now being done instantly by a microchip. Simple jobs nowadays tend to get replaced by machines.
Computers causes too much unemployment mostly due to bosses are replacing people with computers. Many argued that labor-displacing technology is a major factor contributing to unemployment (Bell, 2000). Simple tasks such as parking attendant, customer service representatives eventually got replaced by machines. For instance, the Internet has sources which provide emails such as hotmail and yahoo. This is a quicker way to send mail other than writing a post-letter and using a stamp to send it which on average takes 3-7 days to reach its destination. So, the postman is getting less paid and some theories suggest that the postman no longer be needed in the future to come.
On the other hand, some claimed that the advanced technology creates various new jobs. Jobs that were once invalid have been made available through the development of technology. For instance, the invention of personal computers has open up many fields of professionals such as computer forensics, computer programmer, computer engineers etc. The development of each individual field eventually needs more and more talent and manpower to drive it to higher levels.
Identification and Discussion
This issue arose to me due to the dilemma between technology and unemployment growth. The relationship between technology, employment and unemployment is complicated (Padalino & Vivarelli, 1997). It is important for every individual to understand this.
Implication for Society
The IT industry is growing at fast pace and it’s not slowing down for anybody. Therefore, in order to cope with the society, changes have to be made, either on the society or on the industry itself.
The relationship between technology, employment and unemployment is complicated (Padalino & Vivarelli, 1997). Many claimed that labour-displacing technology is a major factor driving unemployment. Others claim that advanced technology creates many new jobs. The key idea in the former scenario is that as technology increasingly replaces labour, we get ‘jobless growth’. Yet from an aggregate, long-term perspective in the advanced economies, it is widely agreed that technology enhances aggregate employment growth, thus avoiding the ‘jobless growth’ pattern.
