Introduction

Plastic surgery is a type of surgery that improves a person’s appearance and ability to function. According to Izenberg (2006, p.1), the word “plastic” come from the Greek word plastikos which means to form or mold. This surgery can only be constructed by qualified plastic surgeons. There are two types of plastic surgery: cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery. Both have different procedures and for different purposes. Many methods are used in these types of surgery. As we know, plastic surgery becomes more and more popular in the world due to its excellent results. Hence, this research proposal will discuss the types of plastic surgery, the method used in constructing the surgery and current laws pertaining plastic surgery, then delve into the benefits and setbacks of having plastic surgery as well as the its alternatives. Finally, this project paper will conclude as to whether plastic surgery is a boon or a bane.

Types of Plastic Surgery

Reconstructive Surgery

The aim of having reconstructive plastic surgery is to sustain body function. It is performed to correct functional impairments caused by birth defects like ‘cleft lips, palates and ear deformities’ (Izenberg 2006, p.1), infections, development abnormalities, traumatic injuries, disease, aging or removal of cancers or tumors like breasts cancer.

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is conducted to repair or remold parts of the body to boost one’s self-esteem. Common cosmetic surgery procedures are blepharoplasty, Botox injection, dermabrasion, facelift, liposuction, and mammoplasty.

Blepharoplasty is also called eyelid surgery. The upper eyelid or lower eyelid is restructured by the elimination or transposition of extra tissue and by strengthening of surrounding muscles and tendons. The surgeon will make openings following the natural lines of the eyelids, in the creases of upper lids, and just below the lashes in lower lids. Eyelid surgery is usually carried out under local anaesthesia around the eyes area. It is painless even if the patients stay awake. General anaesthesia is seldom used.
