Pablo Picasso is one of the most well known Modern Masters. One of his works include the Portrait de Jacqueline de Face, II that was made in 1962. The artwork was made from a lithograph, printed on a woven paper to see the arches block letter watermarks. The lithograph block was 25 ¼ x 20 ¾ , but the artwork support on the woven paper is 29 5/8 x 24 3/8. The Portrait de Jacqueline de Face, II is currently in display at Laguna Fine Arts Gallery. Picasso made 50 prints from the same linograph block of the portrait of his wife Jacqueline. The work’s title completely described the subject of the artwork, which is the portrait of his wife Jacqueline The use of three different variation of brown and the wide and freehand lines defines the simple, yet detailed face of his wife as he shows his love towards her.
The entire portrait uses curvilinear, wide, and freehand lines. The curvilinear lines are used most in the eyes and ears area. All of the lines of the artwork is wide and freehand. The lines are freehand because there is no evidence that Picasso used an aid of a ruler, compass, or protractor. All of the lines are wide and prominent. As a result, the print appears to be two-dimensional and flat. The artwork does not have any traditional laws of perspective, instead the details of the artwork are out of perspective. The eyes in the artwork are most out of perspective because it takes up the most space of the face. There is a positive use of space because the artwork is taken over by a woman’s face with detailed lines. There are no solid shapes, instead there is a great use of lines and change of color to fill the space. There is not much use of light in this artwork, the light seems to be reflecting at the contours are, the cheekbones, the nose, and forehead. The tones of the face are darker as the deeper the contours, the color becomes dark brown. The colors becomes lighter when the artist wants to create depth for the face. The predominant colors that were used are black, dark brown, light brown, and beige. There are no blending of the colors. The colors are solid, there are a contrast in colors, the light brown and beige is placed next to the black and dark brown. Only the hair and the pupils were dark brown. The entire outline of the face were black in color. The face was mostly light brown. Beige was used to show the depth and contours of the face. The colors are not complimentary because they are mostly all the same colors, just three different shades of brown, other than black. The texture of the print is rough. There is no blending of the colors. The lines are black and are not blended in to the shapes. The use of colors are very solid, there is not smooth transition from one color to the next. The lines are not straight or smooth, instead they are wide, thick, and rough.
The composition is fragment because the facial features ...
