In 1941, the United States reluctantly entered the raging war in Europe. Upon entering, a new path was traveled, the course of history was forever altered, and the traditional tactics of war were abandoned in order to out maneuver Hitler and Japan’s plan to dominate the world. From the attack on Pearl Harbor to the battle of Iwo Jima, American women and men were affected economically, socially, and personally. As a result of such persistence, skill, and determination, America emerged as a superpower among the Allied Forces and entered the Atomic Age.
America and It’s Entrance to War
On Sept. 1, 1939, President Roosevelt appeared keen on the fact that the United States would remain neutral toward the war in Europe. When asked by a reporter on whether America would remain out of the war, President Roosevelt replied: “…I believe we can, and every effort will be made by the Administration to do so.” Many did not agree with this statement and believed Roosevelt actually desired to enter the war. As the war continued around the globe, growing in size and capacity, many opportunities for America to join the war arose. It is well know that “America’s leaders were attempting to force the U.S. into the war even though the public did not didn’t want it.” Opportunities began arising for just this. One major opportunity would be the fall of the Japanese purple war-time code, which allowed American forces to begin listening to Japanese war messages. Another subject would be the Tripartite Treaty, which stated that if any of the Axis powers declared a state of war, the remaining powers were obligated to also do so. The latter of these two examples becomes a main subject in entry to the war. President Roosevelt and other leaders now had a way to force America into the war without being visually responsible. The treaty mentioned earlier meant that if America provoked any other country from the Axis forces, it would result in war with Germany as well. Japan is the first country to become the provoked. With the U.S. already aiding its allied forces, and the decision to embargo oil shipments from Japan, the attack on Pearl Harbor arises, abruptly forcing America into WWII.
Pearl Harbor
“From about 0740 hours to 1030 hours on Sunday 7 December 1941, the principal U.S. Navy base in the Pacific Ocean, at Pearl Harbor on Oahu was attacked.” No warning was given for the attack. “The attack consisted of 353 aircraft launched from six Japanese aircraft carriers.” The attack on Pearl Harbor is said to have been extensively researched and well planned. Admiral Nagumo was the commander of the First Air Fleet of Japan. The fleet was considerably large consisting of 33 vessels. The events at Pearl Harbor began with the fleet’s descent from anchorage at 0600 hours. “The plan called for the Fleet to steam due east along the 43rd Parallel, an area visually free of commercial ...
